My intent with these stories is to expose students to the past tenses in Spanish bit by bit in a low stress, enjoyable manner. We spend 10-15 minutes on the story, depending upon what additional details students offer. I also try and have at least one extension activity to reinforce the story. However, I am looking for their understanding and comfort with the past tense to accumulate story by story. I look forward to seeing how this approach helps them begin to develop familiarity and confidence with the past tense. Most of my focus in Spanish 1 has centered around the present tense with the storytelling and CI lessons Elena and I have created. I personally have preferred until this point to not mix tenses to have students feeling confident in the present. I wanted to begin introducing the past tense to help students transition to Spanish II at the high school. It occurred to me that using the same stories I taught in the present tense and simply changing them to the past would offer students less mental load to deal with when being exposed to a new grammatical construct. I thought it would also serve as a nice review of prior vocabulary. Since the stories are ready to go in a Google presentation it was relatively easy to change them. I mixed the imperfect and the preterite as that was how the story was structured when I switched tenses. I am now on the 3rd past tense story this week and the kids have been responding very well to them. The old stories from 7th grade have taken them down memory lane! We have also been able to do some fun story asking and they have added all sorts of creative details to the storyline that they were not able to do in the original telling of the present tense story. It is fun for them to see how far they have come since their first story and to see their growth as language learners.
